FJI: Nadi Downtown

Nadi, Fiji

The downtown area of Nadi is small enough to be explored by foot. To begin with, here's a picture of the town council building with the national flag standing still on top of it. BTW, at the point of writing, the country is deliberating on the new flag design.

I was actually pretty surprised to see quite a huge number of cars within the area. Anyway, there are quite a few money changers along the way whenever you need cash.

Rups Big Bear is a chain of furniture stores in the country.

Chicken Express is a famous fried chicken joint from Australia.

Just a stone's throw away from Nadi Downtown Hotel is the handicraft market, which is stocked with various items from embroideries to carved statues. The locals may seem a bit aggressive as they try to sell their merchandise, but a polite decline is usually enough to ward them off.

I unlocked an achievement during the trip. Frankly speaking, I sent a post card for the first time in my life as a relatively new friend of mine, an avid traveller as well, requested for one. So far I've received two from him. Thanks, Don!

Yes, it was my first time stepping into a post office overseas.
I went to the wet market on one of the mornings. That was where I saw kava, native to South Pacific islands, for the first time. The roots and stems are made into a sedating beverage loved by the locals.

No, I didn't bring those back to Singapore as gifts. :P
Just as Singapore uses English as a unifying language with three other official languages representing the three major races, Fiji uses English likewise, together with Hindi and Fijian. The following sign in the sheltered market shows exactly that.

Should one need more ingredients to cook after the market area closes, he can get them at the area just outside the market as the peddlers try to sell whatever things they've got left for the day.

Besides food, there are flowers too~
There's a bus terminal near the market.
Another interesting thing that I noted is the fact that there are disproportionately many supermarkets within such a small downtown area. The competition between the various chains, such as Food Hall, Shop N Save and New World, seems pretty intense. There are lots of items imported from Indonesia, such as toiletries and even instant spices.

Three supermarkets standing side by side!
After the sun sets, the downtown area isn't as bustling

A chemist's place is essentially a pharmacy.
I shall end the post by listing down the four eateries that I tried in the area:
- Tigers Lounge Bar & Cafe (Chinese and Indo-Fijian)
- The New Nadi Farmers Club (Western and Indo-Fijian)
- Grace Road Kitchen (Korean)
- Chicken Express (fast food)
