JPN: Seven Hells of Beppu (Part 1)

Beppu, Oita, Japan Daily: 8.00am - 5.00pm Probably the most popular attractions of the hot spring town of Beppu, the so-called Seven Hells of Beppu are geothermal pools of various sizes and colours for viewing. Five of them are within walking distance in Kannawa district, while the other two are in Shibaseki district.

3-14-3 Kitahama, Beppu, Oita, Japan As far as possible, I always try to stay at least one night in a Japanese style room whenever I'm travelling in the Land of the Rising Sun. I managed to book such a room facing Beppu Bay at Tenku Yubo Seikaiso (3*), which is a 10-minute walk from Beppu railway station.

Fukuoka-Beppu  (3h 12m) ETD: 10.24am (GMT + 9) ETA:  1.36pm (GMT + 9) From Fukuoka, my BFFs and I'd be going to Beppu, one of the most famous hot spring resort towns in Japan. Yufuin No Mori (lit. The Forest of Yufuin) is a resort train service run by JR Kyushu. Seat reservation is compulsory to take the train that prides itself in its warm wooden interior.

Fukuoka City, Fukuoka, Japan In the previous post , I've covered a few of the sights in the central region of Fukuoka, i.e. Hakata Ward and Chuo Ward. This post, on the other hand, covers the things that my BFFs and I saw as we made my way to and from Fukuoka Tower in the northern area during the day, as well as the original Ichiran store in the evening.

Fukuoka City, Fukuoka, Japan As the largest city in Kyushu, Fukuoka is one of Japan's ten most populated cities. Due to its proximity to mainland Asia, especially South Korea and China, it has been an important harbour city for many centuries. The city today was actually born from two regions in 1889: the port city of Hakata and the former castle town of Fukuoka.

JPN: Tocho-ji & Shofuku-ji

[Tocho-ji] 2-4 Gokushomachi, Hakata, Fukuoka, Japan Daily: 9.00am - 5.00pm Tocho-ji and Shofuku-ji are two Buddhist temples of different sects, which are located not far from  Kushida Shrine . My BFFs and I dropped by Tocho-ji first, which was founded in 806, making it the oldest Shingon Buddhist temple in the entire Kyushu region. The cover photo below was taken at Shofuku-ji, a Zen Buddhist temple.

1-41 Kamikawabatamachi, Hakata, Fukuoka, Japan Daily: 4.00am - 10.00pm Kushida Shrine is a tutelary Shinto shrine in Fukuoka, Japan that was founded in 757. It's dedicated to Amaterasu, the goddess of the sun and the universe, and Susanoo, the god of the sea and storms. A local summer festival called Hakata Gion Yamakasa is centred on this particular shrine.

1 Ohorikoen, Chuo, Fukuoka, Japan Located to the west of Maizuru Park , Ohori Park is an equally pleasant park with a large pond at its centre. The Japanese word ohori means 'moat', and the park is so named as the pond once served as part of the moat system of the neighbouring Fukuoka Castle.

1 Jonai, Chuo, Fukuoka, Japan Maizuru Park is the site of the ruins of Fukuoka Castle, which was also called Maizuru Castle. The best time to visit is usually between late March and early April, as the park is known to be the city's most pleasant spot for cherry blossom viewing. In autumn, you can see the beautiful colours of the ginkgo trees.

Maizuru Park, Chuo, Fukuoka, Japan Daily: 9.00am - 5.00pm Korokan was one of the ancient facilities to host foreign diplomats. Located within Maizuru Park that's not far from Akasaka subway station, which shall be the topic of the next post, it was built during the Heian period, the last division of classical Japanese history that lasted from 794 to 1185.

JPN: Nagahama Fish Market Centre

3-11-3 Nagahama, Chuo, Fukuoka, Japan Nagahama Fish Market is the largest commercial fish market in Fukuoka, Japan. The wet market sells the best catches of the day to local traders and clientele, but today's short post is about the Fish Market Centre where you can find restaurants and a small information hall.

JPN: Hotel Sunline Fukuoka Hakata Ekimae

4-11-18 Hakata Ekimae, Hakata, Fukuoka, Japan Hotel Sunline Fukuoka Hakata Ekimae (3*) is a mere 5-minute walk from Hakata train station in Fukuoka, Japan. There are a few types of guest rooms at the hotel with only two Japanese style ones out of a total of 155. There's no fitness centre, let alone a swimming pool, at the hotel.
