UGA: Entebbe International Airport

End of Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, Entebbe, Uganda Entebbe International Airport is located on the shores of Lake Victoria. It's the only international airport of Uganda. It used to serve as the hub for Uganda Airlines, the flag carrier, which was founded in 1976, but eventually ceased operations in 2001. Plans of reviving the airline are underway at the point of writing.

UGA: Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Ngamba Island, Lake Victoria, Uganda Roughly 23 km southeast of Entebbe, Uganda's chimpanzee sanctuary founded in 1998 provides a semi-natural environment for the primates to recover and thrive over their lifespan of up to 60 years. Its mission is "to sustainably conserve chimpanzees in their habitats and provide captive care to those who can't survive in the wild."

UGA: Lake Victoria

Entebbe, Uganda One of the African Great Lakes, Lake Victoria is the largest lake by area in the continent. It also claims the title of the world's largest tropical lake with a surface area of close to 60,000 square kilometres. It's surrounded by three countries: Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

UGA: Kampala Downtown

Kampala, Uganda Kampala is the capital city of Uganda, which is reachable in an hour by car on average from Entebbe International Airport. Being the largest city in the country, it's divided into five boroughs. A news article in 2016 stated that Kampala was ranked the best East African city to live in, though I'm not sure if it's still the case now.

UGA: Basilica of the Uganda Martyrs

Today's post is on the Basilica of the Uganda Martyrs located in the Namugongo district that's approximately 14 km away from the central business district of Kampala. The Roman Catholic minor basilica is one of the largest Christian pilgrimage destinations in Africa.

UGA: Baha'i House of Worship

Baha'i Road, Kampala, Uganda Daily: 9.00am - 5.00pm Prior to doing research for the trip, I'd never heard of Baha'i, a faith that teaches the essential worth of all religions, as well as the unity and equality of all individuals. At the point of writing, the one and only Baha'i temple in Africa is in the capital city of Uganda, which was completed in 1961.

UGA: Kasubi Tombs

Masiro Road, Kampala, Uganda Kasubi Tombs is the burial site for four kings of the traditional kingdom of Buganda, as well as other members of the royal family. It was inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites at the end of 2001, given its status as "one of the most remarkable buildings using purely vegetal materials in the entire region of sub-Saharan Africa".

UGA: Hotel Ruch Kampala

3 Kintu Road, Kampala, Uganda Hotels in the capital city of Uganda are not exactly cheap. After a thorough searching process through various hotel booking websites, my BFF and I settled on Hotel Ruch Kampala (3*) that's centrally located. We were also pleasantly surprised at the hospitality rendered by the hotel.

[KQ420] NBO-EBB (1h 20m) Boeing 737-800 ETD: 8.30am (GMT + 3)  ETA:  9.50am (GMT + 3) Following the flight onboard Kenya Airways KQ513 from Mali, Bamako to Nairobi, Kenya, my BFF and I were headed to Entebbe, Uganda with an older Boeing 737-800 deployed for KQ420. For flight KQ411 in the opposite direction, we had a chance to fly with one of Kenya Airways' Embraer 190.

BKO-NBO (7h 10m) Boeing 737-800 ETD: 7.45pm (GMT)  ETA:  5.55pm (GMT + 3) In all honesty, during the planning stage, I had a very hard time deciding where to go next from Mali. I was considering Mauritania, Kenya and Uganda, but eventually decided on Uganda as I could secure a relatively cheaper non-direct flight ticket with Kenya Airways, given how expensive airfares are to and from Mali in general.

MLI: Modibo Keita International Airport

Near Sénou District, Bamako, Mali Named after the first president of Mali, Modibo Keita International Airport is the only international airport in the country. Formerly known as Bamako-Sénou International Airport when it was opened to air traffic in 1974, it's located approximately 15 km south of downtown Bamako.

Avenue de la Liberte, Bamako, Mali Daily: 6.30am - 5.30pm Located to the north of the  National Museum and the  National Park , National Zoo of Mali is home to over a hundred animal species. After undergoing extensive rehabilitation and expansion for 2 years since June 2011, the zoo opened its doors to the public again since its inauguration for the second time on 20 June 2013.

Avenue de la Liberte, Bamako, Mali Tue-Sun: 9.00am - 5.30pm National Museum of Mali is an archaeological and anthropological museum in the capital city with the mission of promoting national unity and honouring traditional Malian culture. It was once called Sudanese Museum from its inception in 1953 under French colonial rule till the independence of Mali in 1960.
