BEL: Island of Tears

Trinity District, Minsk, Belarus
Daily: 9.00am - 9.00pm

Island of Tears is a hauntingly serene place connected to the city of Minsk by an arch bridge. The small island is where a memorial stands, commemorating Soviet soldiers from Belarus who perished during the war in Afghanistan from 1979 to 1988.

From Gorky Park, we went for lunch before continuing our walk to the island.

Crossing the bridge to the island where no one else was there.

A small part of Svislach River was frozen.
Do take note of the rules and regulations at the memorial complex, including the prohibition of drinking alcohols, bringing pets and riding on small vehicles.

No one was at the small office when we stepped onto the island.
In front of the memorial lies a bronze icon of the Mother of God.

The erection of the memorial began towards the end of 1988, but it was only on 3 August 1996 that it was officially opened to the public.

The figures of mourning women symbolise Belarusian mothers mourning over the lost of their sons.

Murals of biblical scenes can be seen on the walls of the sanctum.
There's also a statue of a crying angel on the island.

He weeps eternally as he could not protect and save the Belarusian soldiers from death.

Enjoying the view a little bit~
The war claimed the lives of 771 Belarusian soldiers. On top of that, approximately 720 soldiers were permanently handicapped and twelve went missing.
