JPN: Nagahama Fish Market Centre

3-11-3 Nagahama, Chuo, Fukuoka, Japan

Nagahama Fish Market is the largest commercial fish market in Fukuoka, Japan. The wet market sells the best catches of the day to local traders and clientele, but today's short post is about the Fish Market Centre where you can find restaurants and a small information hall.

The wet market is off-limits to the public most of the time, except on the second Saturday of every month.

The Fish Market Centre is a 15-minute walk from Tenjin subway station.

It's mostly occupied by offices.

The Fish Market Centre was established in 1955.

There are some restaurants and shops on the first two levels of the building.

Take a look at some drawings done by primary school students.
Okiyo Shokudo (おきよ食堂) is one of the more popular eateries there.

Everything looks tempting!

Those must be done by famous people.
The information hall is located on the second floor. While everything is written in Japanese, I'm sure it won't harm taking a look even if you can't read the language.

Different roles wear different coloured caps at the fish market.

Which of the following seafood items do you like best?

You can listen to a sample audio of fish auctioneers in action. Below are three short recordings that I did. Please ignore me being cheeky in the third video, pretending to participate in the auction by shouting a random figure that came to mind.

I heard that on the day when the wet market is accessible to the public, many locals and tourists alike typically start lining up from as early as 7.00am to get in when the doors open at 9.00am.
