AUS: Queen Victoria Market

131 King Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Affectionately known as Vic Market by locals, Queen Victoria Market has been a central part of daily life in Melbourne since it officially opened in 1878. Spanning several city blocks with an area of approximately 7 hectares, it stands as the largest open-air market in the Southern Hemisphere.

Upon checking in, my travel buddy and I informed the front desk staff that we were expecting our luggage to be delivered by Qantas. He kindly assured us that once the bags arrived, they'd be brought up directly to our room.

Arriving from the southern end, I first found myself in the open-air section dedicated to specialty shopping. It essentially means non-food items.

My eyes lit up the moment I spotted Pikachu.

Boomerang, anyone?

How soft those rugs are!
It turns out that there's a stall that sells something edible in this section. Are you a fan of Turkish delight?

An unsheltered walkway with more shops runs between the specialty shopping section from the fresh produce area, marking a boundary while allowing the bustling energy of the market to flow freely.

My excitement level practically doubled as I stepped into the edible section.

It was my first time tasting eucalyptus honey.

Looking for organic produce? You’ll definitely find some there.

Known for its warm cinnamon colour, Bosc pears are nicknamed the 'aristocrat of pears'.

The sight of brownies always makes me go weak.
The non-edible goods in this section, though technically they could be, are the vibrant flowers on display.

If you're looking for something to eat, you’ll find plenty on offer.

What's up with Satay Reviver?

Mussel Pot: shell-ebrating good flavours!

I didn't fill my stomach there as I'd be going somewhere for lunch, but I couldn't resist trying old-school delights from American Doughnut Kitchen.

Having been around since 1950, they’ve clearly earned their reputation.

Where are the meat and seafood? They're in the indoor section of the market.

Everything is well-organised and clean.

I always tell people I like to eat beef to get myself beefier.

What's your most favourite seafood item?

From a distance, I thought they were confectionery.

A Melbourne institution, McIver's boasts over 24 varieties of coffee and 72 varieties of tea.
There are quite a number of stalls offering quick bites inside.

Tribal Tastes brings a slice of Africa, mainly South African delights, to Melbourne.
Did you know that parts of the market are built over the site of the old Melbourne Cemetery?

The entire market has gone plastic bag-free.

Occasionally during summer and winter, the market transforms into a lively night market in the evening, complete with live music and entertainment.
