AUS: South Melbourne Market

322 Coventry Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Sat, Sun, Wed: 8.00am - 4.00pm
Fri: 8.00am - 5.00pm

Let's take a look at another well-loved market in Melbourne that's older than Queen Victoria Market. Established in 1867, South Melbourne Market covers an area of approximately 4 hectares. Did you know that the market has banned the sale and use of caged eggs in its food stalls since 2014?

My travel buddy and I took Tram 96 from Southern Cross railway station to get there.

We entered the indoor section from the eastern entrance closest to the roundabout.

Zoom in to see a nice image of a horse wearing a feathered headdress.

I certainly hadn't seen wine bottles displayed in wooden buckets like that before.

Take your pick: cupcakes or Basque cheesecake?
The first thing that really caught our attention was Agathé Patisserie because of the number of customers gathering in front of it. We didn't join the queue though.

The market was alive with energy as locals and visitors weave through the bustling aisles in search of the day’s best finds.

They crossed out the price of A$49.99 (~S$44.30) per kg, but what was the final price?

Ralph's Meat Company has been around since 1908.

What we call samosas in Singapore are referred to as curry puffs there.

I wonder how spicy is that Volcano Pizza.
South Melbourne Seafoods seems to be one of the big players.

Boy, don't they look absolutely appetising!

I tried some chilled prawns and freshly shucked oysters from Aptus Seafood.

I used to dislike oysters when I was younger, but those zinc-packed delights are irresistible to me now.

In the past, the market began as a simple outdoor trading spot.

Shop 116 is truly an Aladdin's cave.

I was drawn to the chocolate bars shaped like coloured pencils.
The construction of the Food Hall section began in 1991, serving as an extension to the existing market.

Ba Ba Rolls offers free coffee on certain days with a minimum order of AU$18.00 (~S$16.00).

Is that a curry-flavoured rice noodle that's commonly found in Hong Kong?

Let's have a quick look of a few of the shops outside.

Do you have a huge paella-te for paella?

Are you the kind of person who doesn’t mind paying a little extra for organic food?
Have you heard about dim sim, a Chinese dumpling-inspired snack developed in Melbourne in the 1940s by William Chen Wing Young?

I enjoyed my dim sim with a cup of mulled wine from the stall next door.

The market has lived through multiple refurbishments following fires. The most devastating incident occurred in 1981 when two of the original sheds were destroyed and, later that same year, several stalls were damaged by bombs.
