BRN: Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque

Jalan McArthur, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei

Today's short post is on what's considered to be one of the most beautiful mosques in the Asia Pacific region. Named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei, Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in the capital city of Brunei was completed in 1958. I personally took all but two photos featured in this post.

It's mentioned that the mosque is the first state mosque, which can accommodate up to 3,000 worshipers. It's also the main mosque used for religious state activities and royal solemnisation ceremonies.

The marble minaret stands at 52 m.

The dome of the mosque is covered in pure gold.

In the middle of the artificial lagoon is a replica of a 16th century barge named 'Mahligai' that was built to commemorate the 1,400th anniversary of Nuzul Al-Qur'an, or the Qur'an Revelation Day. The barge was once used as a pavilion for the Qur'an recitation competitions from the 1960s to the early 1970s.

I'm so proud of this photo that I snapped using my camera phone. <3

During the holy month of Ramadan, non-Muslim visitors are advised not to enter the grounds of the mosque, thus I didn't step my feet into such a majestic place of worship. Anyway, photography isn't allowed inside. I found two photos online, which can be found towards the end of the post.

Care to read this for me, anyone?

I shall end this post with an interesting piece of fact. Nearly all of the materials used for the building were imported: the marble from Italy, the granite from Shanghai, the crystal chandeliers from England and the carpets from Saudi Arabia.
