Khem Khong, Luang Prabang, Laos
Daily: 8.00am - 5.00pm
As one of the most significant Buddhist temples in the country, it's no surprise that Wat Xieng Thong (lit. Temple of the Golden City) is known as the icon and pride of Luang Prabang. Built in 1559 by King Setthathirath, the temple was where the Lao kings were crowned until 1975.
The temple is located near where the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers join. The entrance fee is LAK 20,000 (~S$3.40).

Thankfully, the main structure was pretty much spared during the Black Flag Army invasion in 1887. |
The majestic temple remains in its original form with reparation word done on the roofs, as well as gold leaf gilding and gold lacquering on the walls.
|
The roofs look lovely, don't you think? |

As a final note, bare shoulders and legs should be covered when entering the sacred place. Traditional sarong may be hired at the ticketing booth. Sunglasses should also be removed as a sign of respect.
