CAM: Banteay Kdei & Sras Srang

Angkor Archaelogical Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia
Daily: 5.00am - 6.00pm

This post is on two places of interests within the Angkor Archaeological Park that are close to one another: a temple called Banteay Kdei (lit. A Citadel of Chambers) and a reservoir called Sras Srang. Banteay Kdei is currently dilapidated as a result of not only faulty construction, but also the poor quality of the sandstones used.

The construction of the temple complex began in the middle of the 12th century during the reign of Jayavarman VII.

Upon seeing the entrance, I imagined myself in a RPG, trying to explore a ruin.

There wasn't anyone around the first building encountered.

A burst of colours was seen when I stepped into the building.

What remains of a seemingly huge statue...

Mind me posing~

I wonder how it felt like living in that complex that was once a Buddhist monastery?

A clear evidence of collapse and erosion...

If I'm not mistaken, that's a structure to collect rain water.
To the east of Banteay Kdei is Sras Srang, which was dug in the middle of the 10th century. It's still partially flooded today.

Pretty breathtaking, yea?

I shall end off this post with a relatively more recent piece of factual information. A French archaeologist, B. P. Groslier, led the excavation at the cemetery that was discovered at the northeastern corner of the reservoir starting in 1963. It's said that ritual deposits have rarely been found to contain ingots, but his team apparently unearthed several lead ingots from the site.
