GEO: Batumi Downtown

Batumi, Georgia

Batumi is often referred to as the 'Pearl of the Black Sea'. A charming 'seaside' city, it's the second largest in Georgia in terms of both size and population. It's especially popular during summer and has seen a steady increase in the number of visiting Turks, particularly due to geographical proximity.

As of December 2017, the area near Sky Tower Hotel saw a number of tall buildings under construction.

That's a statue of a flexible dancer, if I'm not mistaken.

Batumi Public Service Hall is colourfully lit after sunset.

The series of photos below is a continuation of my exploration by foot from Batumi Boulevard.

Interested to catch a movie or two at Cinema Apollo?

Such a majestic-looking building!

The Astronomical Clock facing Europe Square is made in Germany.

Doesn't it look like something from a wonderland?
The nearby Statue of Medea was designed by Davit Khmaladze and erected in Europe Square in 2007. In Greek mythology, an enchantress who helped Jason, leader of the Argonauts, to obtain the Golden Fleece from her father, King Aeëtes of Colchis.

The Golden Fleece is a symbol of authority and kingship.

Can someone help me confirm that it's the statue of Davit Khmaladze?
The view at night is equally impressive.

Princess Casino Batumi seems to be one of the best rated casinos in the city.

Originally a wooden building erected in 1874, the Armenian church in Batumi was rebuilt into a stone edifice in 1887.

Did you know that the church was used as a planetarium during Soviet times?

The Holy Communion~

An Indonesian antique shop spotted across the church!
The distinctly Italian piazza in Batumi usually hosts concerts of world famous musicians visiting the city.

The piazza houses a couple of restaurants and bars.
My BFF and I purposely walked to the piazza again in the evening just to see how it's lit up.

On the following day, after dropping by Batumi Dolphinarium, we walked to the lower station of Argo Cable Car.

It's always been my dream to fly around since young, but never have I wanted to be a pilot.

The Holy Mother Virgin Nativity Cathedral built in 1897 is a Georgian Orthodox one with a neo-Gothic architecture.

It was originally a Roman Catholic church before the occupation of the Red Army.

The building was used as a high-voltage laboratory during the Soviet era.

The lights weren't turned on when we were there, hence the partial darkness.
After returning from the viewing platform of Anuria Mountain, we walked all the way back to the hotel area to have our last dinner in the country.

There are three tourist information centres in the city, one of which is near the lower station.

BTW, there is a small hotel called Dolphin Hotel (2*) in Batumi.

'Twas roughly the halfway mark of my trip in December 2017.
Here are the list of eateries visited during my stay in Batumi:
- Mimino (Georgian)
- Retro (Georgian)
Grand Grill (Western and Middle Eastern)
