BGM: St. Nicholas Church

Rue au Beurre / Boterstraat, Brussels, Belgium
Daily: 9.00am - 4.00pm

Église Saint-Nicolas (French) or Sint-Niklaaskerk (Dutch) is one of the first four churches in the city of Brussels. It was built in 1125, though much of the original structure didn't live to see this day as it suffered from heavy damages due to the French bombardment of the city in 1695.

On our first day in Brussels, my BFF and I saw the facade of the church. We couldn't go in though as it was past 6.30pm.

We went there again on our last day in town to check out the interior.

St. Nicholas is the patron saint of merchants and sailors, among others.

The church isn't that big, but it offers a peaceful atmosphere from the hustle and bustle outside.

Don't you love that wooden pulpit with such an intricate design?

One of the many versions of The Last Supper~
There's an interesting relic of the Martyrs of Gorkum, a group of 19 Dutch Catholic clerics and friars who were hanged on 9 July 1572 for refusing to convert to Protestanism.

Before leaving, we saw a nice-looking diorama near the entrance of the church, though I'm not sure if it's a permanent exhibition.

It's said that a cannonball fired by the French in 1695 is still lodged in one of the pillars of the church.
