SXM: Maho Beach

Along Beacon Hill Road, Simpson Bay, Sint Maarten

Maho Beach is well-known for its location being adjacent to Princess Juliana International Airport, where you can have the experience of having aircraft flying just a short distance above your head. At the same time, you can have a feel of jet blast, which is the rapid air movement produced by aircraft jet engines.

From the airport, my BFF and I decided to walk to the beach with our luggage as we didn't want to spend US$10.00 (~S$13.80) for a 5-minute taxi ride. We had lots of time to kill anyway.

T-shirts or hats, anyone?

Such a lively sun-kissed beach!
There's a sign that warns people of the hazard of jet blast. It was unfortunate that a woman was blown by the jet blast of Caribbean Airlines BW457, resulting in her death as her head smashed onto concrete, on 12 July 2017.

Frankly speaking, prior to the trip, we weren't sure how would the situation be at Maho Beach after being ravaged by Hurricane Irma in September 2017. It's certainly good to see that the island is alive and kicking again.

How many of you know that Havaianas is a Brazilian brand?

Should you prefer to swim in non-salty water~

We ate brunch at Sunset Bar and Grill, an eatery that has a never-say-die attitude, evident in how it keeps bouncing back after being destroyed by Hurricane Omar in October 2018 and Hurricane Irma last year.

For the uninitiated, cheesesteak originated from Philadelphia, the USA.
The eatery used to turn on a speaker that broadcasted radio transmissions between pilots and the control tower of the airport. Sadly, it was no longer in use by August 2015.

I've never flown in a helicopter before.

"I am sailing, I am sailing home again 'cross the sea~"
We didn't encounter any large aircraft when we were there, but we were happy enough to feel a bit of jet blast from the following aeroplane.

I'm looking forward to return to Sint Maarten in the future to spend more time spotting aircraft at Maho Beach, as well as to visit its vibrant capital city, Philipsburg.
