CAN: Minoru Park

7191 Granville Avenue, Richmond, British Columbia, Canada

A former horse-racing track that doubled as an airstrip, Minoru Park covers a total area of 18 hectares. In fact, the Japanese-sounding park, named after King Edward VII's Irish thoroughbred racehorse, used to be one of the first major aviation hubs in Western Canada.

It's no surprise that the serene park is one of the places for Walk Richmond, a volunteer-run guided walking program.

The old Chinese lady was sleeping peacefully on the bench.

The fountain is a lasting tribute to Bill Hnatiuk, a worker who passed away on 23 February 1988.
In Metro Vancouver, locals celebrate a special occasion or honour someone with dedicated park benches, which in turn support the enhancement of city parks. I heard that a donation of C$5,500 (~S$5,723.85) would fund a personalised dedication for a period of ten years.

I had fun observing the wild animals at the park.

Eating happily~ :D

Such a fluffy-looking rabbit!
I took a short video each of the black squirrel and the rabbit.

The park is indeed the green heart of Richmond.

Lovely purple-leaved tree~ <3

Do those leaves have a naturally dry look?

The colours of hydrangea flowers depend on the pH of the soil.

Glorious rows of yellow~

Originally constructed by the bank of Fraser River in 1891, Richmond's first-ever chapel was moved was moved to and rebuilt at the park in 1967. Its historical charm makes it a popular place for wedding.

Not far from the chapel is a performing arts theatre called Gateway Theatre.

Get active using the sports facilities at the park.

I really wanted to join those guys practicing the sport I enjoy the most.

No, not UFO, but flying balls! xD

Minoru Centre for Active Living houses a Seniors Centre that provides facilities promoting active, healthy and social lifestyle opportunities for seniors aged 55 and above.

Would you like to join the oldies in tai chi?

At last, we came across the statue of Minoru. Its win at Epsom Down Racecourse in 1909 made King Edward VII the first reigning British monarch to win a Derby.

Minoru has never raced in Richmond though.
