JPN: Beppu Downtown

Beppu, Oita, Japan

Declared as a city in Oita Prefecture in 1924, Beppu has got more than 2,000 hot spring facilities within a total area of slightly above 125 square kilometres. In fact, it's the second largest in the world in terms of the volume of water available for hot spring bathing, just one spot behind Yellowstone National Park in the USA.

The railway station of the city, as well as all the trains serving it, is operated by JR Kyushu. The Rugby World Cup 2019 was held in Japan, thus a big figure of a rugby ball was seen outside the station last year. Oita Stadium hosted some of the matches apparently.

Is it just me or every single gift shop in Japan always looks so fascinating?
There's an interesting-looking statue of Kumahachi Aburayama, the man who tirelessly promoted the hot springs of Beppu and Yufuin. Besides that, for his love for children, he used to be called a 'shiny uncle'.

"Don't forget to show hospitality to strangers."
There's also a place for you to warm your hands using hot spring water outside the station.

My BFFs and I didn't get the chance to explore much of the city, but we tried to absorb as many sights and sounds as we could.

There's a shopping street called Yayoi Tengu.

I didn't see many cars on the streets.

It seems like that otter-looking character is the mascot of Daichi Mirai Shinkin Bank.

Initially built to help boost tourism in the area, Beppu Tower was erected between 1956 and 1957. At present, it's displaying advertising for Asahi Beer.

On one of the evenings, we visited a very quiet shopping mall that goes by the name Tokiwa Beppu. One of my BFFs tried his hand on one of the claw machines, but he wasn't successful.

Anpanman juice or yogurt drink, anyone?
Situated not far from Beppu Tower and Tenku Yubo Seikaiso, our accommodation of choice, is Matogahama Beach.

It's possible to swim there during warmer months.

Showing my million-dollar grin!

There's a park adjacent to the beach.

Be welcomed by the statue of a goddess with her sexy pose!

That's a monument of friendship between Beppu and Yangmingshan in Taiwan.

Below is a photo of the wallpaper found inside our hotel room. While I didn't manage to take such a nice photo of the city, I did such a panorama while taking the bus to see the Seven Hells of Beppu.

Toyotsune is the only restaurant that we visited in Beppu. It serves Japanese cuisine.
