QAT: Hamad International Airport

End of F Ring Road, Doha, Qatar

Initially known as New Doha International Airport, Hamad International Airport is the sole international airport of Qatar that has replaced the former Doha International Airport. It was originally slated to open in 2009, but after a series of delays, it was finally opened to the public in the second quarter of 2014.

The state-of-the-art airport is located south of Doha, the capital city of Qatar. As mentioned in the previous post on flying to Africa with Ethiopian Airlines ET433 & ET909, the journey between the city and the airport takes at least 15 minutes.

Construction of the airport began in 2005.

After clearing immigration and security screening, you won't miss the sight of the iconic Lamp Bear by Urs Fischer, a Swiss artist, at the grand foyer of the transit area. It's said to be "a playful piece that humanises the space around it and reminds travellers of childhood or precious objects from home".

Did you know that the statue made of bronze, weighing at least 18 tonnes?

There were some artwork displayed in conjuction with the National Day of Qatar.

Qatar Duty Free is a shopping paradise with more than 40,000 squre metres of combined retail and dining space.

My BFF and I didn't really explore the airport before flying off to Africa due to the limited time we had, but we had so much time to spare at the airport while waiting for our flight back to Jakarta, Indonesia.

Those dinosaurs can move and make roaring sounds.

How about some honey to bring home?

I saw at least two food courts in the transit area.

The decoration reminds me of Souq Waqif.
There are lots of eateries around, but these are the only photos that I have.

You can get Arabic coffee and sweets at Qataf Café.

We walked all the way to the northern end of the terminal building.

Jean-Michel Othoniel, a French artist, drew inspiration from the oldest surviving Islamic astrolabe in coming up with this particular artwork titled 'Cosmos' located between Concourse D and E.

We then took the monorail to go back to the grand foyer.

The monorail started operating on 1 November 2016.

What title would you give to this artwork?
At the point of writing, Qatar has a plan to build a second terminal, but it'll be realised only if the present passenger growth outnumbers the projected figures.
