AZE: Heydar Aliyev International Airport

Airport Road, Baku, Azerbaijan

Opened to the public in 1933, Heydar Aliyev International Airport is one of the six international airports, and the biggest one, serving the country. Formerly called Bina International Airport prior to 2004, the airport is located approximately 20 km northeast of the capital city. It's the hub for Azerbaijan Airlines, the flag carrier, and Buta Airways, the low-cost subsidiary.

My BFF and I woke up early, hopping into our Uber ride from Center City Hotel Baku at 5.10am.

Amazing colour of dawn!

Without any traffic jam, we reached the airport within 25 minutes.

That's a rather futuristic-looking bus station.

The airport has been named a 5* Regional Airport by Skytrax since 2018.
I love the ceiling adorned with hexagonal patterns.

There's a food court on the second floor of the public area.

Azerbaijan flag: blue represents its Turkic heritage, red progress and green Islam

Julius Meinl is an Austrian manufacturer and retailer of high-quality coffee and tea.

After checking in with Azerbaijan Airlines, we went straight to the immigration checkpoint and the security screening area.

One of the striking features of the transit area is a bunch of custom-made wooden cocoons that vary in size.

The cocoons house an array of shops, cafés and facilities.

Alas, the bear doesn't look so happy.

There are plenty of seats in the area.

I love the natural colours used in the design of the terminal.

I suppose the sleep pods were closed due to COVID-19.

From there, we walked to the area with the boarding gates, having to pass through the duty free section.

I hardly buy things from the duty free shop of any airport. Do you?
Don't you love the symmetry in the washroom?

The total area of the airport is 65,000 square metres.

The new passenger terminal of the airport was opened in 2015.

If you don't know what to do with your extra cash...
The upper floor of the transit area, which is the fourth floor of the airport, is dedicated to two lounges.

Besides Azerbaijan Airlines Business Lounge, there's Absheron Lounge for most other airlines.
The airport is truly a convergence of architecture and art.

Besides Azerbaijan Airlines and Vietnam Airlines, are there any other carriers with blue aircraft body?
It's unfortunate that I've lost most of the photos for the rest of the trip as my laptop crashed and I don't have them anymore in my handphone. Hence, for the next few posts, I'll be making use of the photos taken by my BFF.
