CAN: Peyto Lake

Icefields Parkway, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada

Here's the last post on the Jasper to Banff One-Way Sightseeing Tour by SunDog Tours. After experiencing the ever-popular Columbia Icefield Adventure, my BFF and I continued our journey to Banff, stopping by a few more points of interest along the way. One of them is Peyto Lake that's famed for its brilliant turquoise colour.

We left Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre at around 2.40pm.

Look at that curve~

Approximately 305 m high, Weeping Wall is a set of cliffs located at the western base of Cirrus Mountain that has a series of cascading waerfalls. In winter, the waterfalls freeze into towering pillars of ice, becoming a popular site for ice climbing.

We enjoyed a short walk near the waterfalls.

I can't remember the details, but those peaks are considered sacred due to the unique shape.

I took those 'closed' pinecones just to take a photo before leaving them in the nature once again.
I really couldn't take my eyes off the scenery as we continued our drive along Icefields Parkway.

At 4.45pm, we reached Bow Summit, the highest point along Icefields Parkway where Peyto Lake is best seen from.

Learn more about glaciology as you make your way to the skywalk.

Pardon my selfie!
The magnificent colour of the lake is due to the glacial silt carried from melting Peyto Glacier by streams. It's been reported that Petyo Glacier has lost about 70% of its mass at the point of writing.

I spotted an interesting plant that I probably hadn't seen before.

We stopped by another lake, which I can't recall the name.

The lake seems to have multiple colours.

One panorama shot - why not?

The traffic came to a halt as everyone was observing a mother black bear with her two cubs.

Take a look at the following video clips of the mother bear happily eating dandelions and her cubs descending a tree before running away respectively. You can also hear our guide, Dave, trying to ask some people to get back into their cars as they were trying to get closer to the bears.

We finally spotted two grizzly bears too, though they were quite far away.

As we were approaching the town of Banff, we saw an ecological bridge. That reminded me of our Eco-Link @ BKE in Singapore, which is the first of such a bridge in Asia.

We reached the town of Banff at around 6.30pm.
