USA: Niagara Falls State Park

332 Prospect Street, Niagara Falls, New York, USA

Aside from the Schengen area, my international land border crossings were limited to Singapore - Johor Bahru, Malaysia, Hong Kong - Shenzhen, China and Macau - Zhuhai, China prior to this trip. With the Niagara Falls straddling the international border, a simple bridge crossing took me from the Canadian side to the USA, adding another experience to my travel repertoire.

The Rainbow Bridge connecting the two countries is open all year long. The fee for pedestrian crossing is a mere US$1.00 (~S$1.35) when leaving the Canadian side.

Which national anthem do you like better: O Canada or The Star-Spangled Banner?

Construction of the bridge started in May 1940, and it was officially opened in November 1941.

With the establishment of the Niagara Reservation in 1885, Niagara Falls State Park is said to be the oldest continuously operating state park in the USA.

Before protective measures were implemented, the areas surrounding Niagara Falls on either side of the river were predominantly under private ownership. Public access to the falls was pretty much limited.

You may want to consider Maid of the Mist to experience the power of Niagara Falls on an all-electric boat tour.

The Niagara Reservation covers an area of 176 hectares.

It felt great to be back to the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave, even though it was short. After spending about 45 minutes, I went back to the Canadian side of the falls.

Did you know that Niagara Falls State Park was recognised as the 10th most beautiful spot in the USA by The Today Show in 2007?
